Chapter Twenty-Five

They drove down the hill from the Monte Verite; the mountain of truth, and Sarah was crying. The truth she had left in her father’s hands was terrible. It might break her father for good she feared. Jessica took a deep breath. “God that was rough kid.” she observed. “I thought you handled it brilliantly though.”

“Just shut up Jess. I’m not proud of it.”

Jessica lifted a hand off the steering wheel. “Ok, ok! Don’t snap at me. I’m on your side remember.”

“Oh Jess! There aren’t any sides here. Nobody wins in this case.”

Jessica nodded acknowledging the sagacity of the statement. “Ok kid. What the hell have you put in that letter anyway? It sounds like a pretty formidable bombshell.”

“Let’s not talk about it for the moment please Jess. Doubtless you’ll get the full account when you return to the house.” Sarah gave a short bitter laugh. “I should imagine it will be an interesting evening’s drama in the family household tonight.”

Jessica shook her head. “I can’t get over the way you’ve changed Sarah. You’re almost a different person.”

“I’m sorry if my new persona doesn’t meet your approval Jess.”

“But it does kid. I’m delighted with my new sister. You’ve always been my kid sister and I love you to bits but now you seem so much more well… grown up and sure of yourself. I always used to think of you as I suppose a bit of a wimp… daddy’s little girl… butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth and all that. All of a sudden you’re this strong woman with her own mind and devil take the hindmost. I admire that. You’ve come a long way kid. I never thought you’d have the guts to face down mum and dad like that. I’m proud of you even if you aren’t.”

“Great! I’ve just alienated my parents possibly forever and you think it’s something to be proud of.”

Jessica nodded. “Yes I do. I don’t think you’ve alienated mum and dad forever kid. They’ll come around. What you did do was stand up for what you believed was right. You did what you believed to be the right thing and then you stood your ground in the face of what, let’s face it, is pretty formidable opposition. That’s nothing to be ashamed of kid. That’s laudable!”

“It doesn’t feel like it Jess. I feel terrible.”

Jessica patted her leg compassionately. “Don’t worry kid. It’ll all turn out all right. Look, what time did you say your train was?”

“It doesn’t really matter Jess. There are trains every half an hour and we’re way ahead of schedule.” Sarah nodded at the clock on the car dashboard. “It’s only six o’clock now. The trains run at six minutes and thirty six minutes past the hour. I was originally planning to take the last one at eight thirty six but that gets me back very late so I can take an earlier train now.”

“Well how about you catch the seven thirty six? That gives us time for a last drink together in Bellinzona.
